Before joining Berkshire Hathaway, Combs worked in the finance industry. He served as an analyst and then portfolio manager at Florida’s state pension fund, the Florida State Board of Administration, managing a portion of the fund’s equity investments. His success in managing the pension fund’s investments caught the attention of Warren Buffett.

Berkshire Hathaway:

In 2010, Warren Buffett hired Todd Combs as an investment manager at Berkshire Hathaway. Combs was one of the key figures identified to potentially succeed Buffett in managing Berkshire’s vast investment portfolio. He was the first investment manager hired by Berkshire Hathaway to manage investments other than Warren Buffett and Charlie Munger, the vice chairman of Berkshire Hathaway.
