How To Find The Right Career

You can do many different jobs. If you are reading this then you have at least 2 valuable skills. You can read and you can write. Both of those skills could be lucrative ‘careers’.

But you probably have a specific job in mind when you think about a career.

Career is like religion in America. The first thing a person asks when they meet another person is : ‘What do you do for a living?’ It is not their fault they have been conditioned to conditioned by all aspects of society to think this way. People associate their personal identity with what they do.

Are a teacher, doctor, professor, mother?

Everyone has to be something and be organized in society. No one is allowed to just be a human that exists in this world.

Let me talk about myself. I have had many different careers. For years I worked for Apple. For years I sold websites. For years I worked at Macy’s, Starbucks, Walgreens, Calloway’s.

Now I am a project manager, website builder, youtuber, investor and husband.

Forget about ‘Career’.

There is no one perfect career out there. You can do many things and you probably will do many things. There are so many different jobs today that did not even exist 10 years ago. I was just told that new high school graduates do not have to work at local retail stores, because tech companies will hire them to develop and implement new technology. These are skills that older generations do not have.

I have been forced to switch jobs many times. It is likely that you will have to adapt to the changing world in the next 10-20-30 years.

For right now, do not think about a job. Think about your skills.

What skills do you currently have?

Start with reading and writing. Those are valuable.

You may also know how to use technology. Learn a language, music, art, teaching.

You may be certified in something.

List all of those skills down.

What skills do you want to get better at?

I am not great at YouTube. But I really enjoy it. It pushed me to be better on camera. Write better scripts. Teach people how to do things. Edit videos. Take engaging photos. Write engaging summaries.

The biggest factor is that I am stretching my skillset and that I want to get better at it.

Maybe I will become a huge YouTube sensation or maybe I will just add to existing skillset.

Identify your top 5 skills.

Throw the rest away.

Get to know LinkedIn well

If you want to work for a business get to know LinkedIn as well as you can. It has so much information about businesses and business professionals.

Once you have identified your top skills, get to work searching.

What type of jobs match your skills?

What type of company do you want to work for?

What are the different salaries for different jobs?

LinkedIn has all the information you need to find your dream job.

Read lots of different job titles and their descriptions. Look at the people that already work for that business. What are the benefits of working for that business?

Can you see yourself working for that business?

Can you develop skills working for that business?

Once you find your dream job title and career work backward from that.

Skill building is never over. Even when you have your dream job, you should look for ways to get better at that job. Do bigger projects. Help more people.

If you are not stretching your skillset, then it might be time to look for a different job. Find the next career.

Document your process.

You have your dream job or be looking for your dream job. Document the process of finding your job and then document what you do on a day to day basis.

People want to know what you are up to. You will want to record your success. You may need to prove to the next company that you have accomplished a lot already and that you deserve more money.

You are not alone. I am still skill building. Still hunting for that perfect career.
