Howdy! I’m Collin.
Dallas native here. Consider me your money coach.
Harness Money started because I was broke, heartbroken and homeless. All at once I was going through a death in the family, a breakup and a job loss.
I could not afford the rental house I was staying in. I was did not have a job. I did not have a plan. I did not understand the nature of money or how to save or grow money.
How did I build my life back up? I went back to school and received my bachelor’s degree in Finance. I started reading books about money. I started talking to new people. I started to live the life that I wanted to live. I was tired of listening to other people.
Most people are afraid. These people will try to give you their fears.
“You need to become a doctor.”
“You need to buy a house.”
Many people fear what they do not know. Even if their current situation is bad, they want to change because the unknown could be worse. If you listen to those fears and adopt them as your own it will lead you down the wrong path.
You have to be honest with yourself. Are you in debt? Do you enjoy your work? What does a great day look like for you?
At my lowest I did not like what I saw in the mirror or in my bank account. I had to change and I did. It took YEARS.
The fundamental principle of money is compounding. Compounding money is the process of slowly adding more and more money to your snowball and then letting time work. It takes decades to build a fortune, but it can happen.
Today, I have no debt and a lot of assets.
Here are few things you should know about me:
- I started at zero.
- No one taught me about money, I had to read books and learn about it myself.
- Texas is great place to grow up, there is a lot happening in the state.
- I am an introvert, everyone should read the book: Quiet to see what type of personality they are.
- I have had many different jobs, but I always find myself back in technology.
I have investment accounts. A 401k, ROTH IRA and HSA.
I created a budget with sinking funds. I still hate budgeting, but I know that I have money set aside so that I will never be homeless again.
There is no secret to becoming rich. It involves creating value and making good money choices.
If you want to become wealthy you need to earn money. That may sound simple, but it was difficult for me. I had so many different jobs that did not work out. I worked for Starbucks, Apple, Macy’s etc. I kept picking jobs because I needed money. I never sat down and asked myself: What job do I want?
Who do I want my boss to be?
The truth is that I wanted to be my own boss. I did not want to have to answer to someone else the rest of my life.
I still have a job at a software company today. I still enjoy working with other people. But my mindset has changed.
I am an owner first. I own assets that work for me.
Money works for me.
I also own my own business. I started Harness Money as a way to provide value to others. As a way to teach myself about money and then pass along that information to other people in a valuable way.
Harness Money is a place where you can learn to earn more money whether that be at a job you love or starting your own business.
Investing. I love investing into the stock market. But there is a universe of investments to choose from out there. Stocks, crypto, real estate, startups. The list is endless.
Harness Money will teach you how to invest in the stock market. How to pick the right stocks.
The skill of investing just takes knowledge. And there is plenty to go around.
There are a lot of things you can learn: investing, stocks, jobs. But there are also a lot of things that you need to unlearn.
I am someone that is a people pleaser. I like to make people happy. But in many cases, no matter what I do people will not be happy. For a long time I did things because people told me to do them and I thought that if I listened to the people around and did what they said that I would be successful and that they would be happy. But that is not what happened.
I did everything that I was told and those people were still unhappy and I was really unhappy. You have to work on unlistening to the messages that people are telling you.
What are you really suited to do? What makes you happy?
What does your best life look like?
Mine includes sleep and travel and dogs and a husband. For a long time that did not include a house. Learn how to listen to yourself and define what is your best life.
Travel is a part of my best life and makes me happier. So at Harness Money I teach people how to travel using credit card points and how to dramatically reduce the cost of travel. How to maximize the time off you do get.
But before the travel comes your mindset. How to think different from the rest of the pack and become an owner of your thoughts and life. If you want to change your life you have to change your thoughts. Your thoughts become your actions or inactions. There have been times when my thoughts have paralyzed my action. What are people going to think of me if I pursue this? What if I try this and it fails?
Stop focusing on everything that could go wrong and focus on everything that could go right.
If you did start saving and investing what is the best thing that could happen. If you quit your job and start a new business what is the best thing that could happen to your business and your life?
My childhood gave me a lot of different fears that I am still working through today. But fear does not rule my life. I have power over my thoughts and I can still have fears, but also dreams. I have the end in mind and am working toward my best life.
Your mind is your most important asset.
What does my life look like today:
I am a millionaire.
I own a house.
I have a partner.
I have a black lab puppy dog that has endless energy.
I am a software project manager.
And I am a business owner.
I travel the world.
But I still have a lot of dreams and goals that I want to achieve. I still struggle with choosing myself. With deflecting other people’s fears. But I keep trying. I keep investing. I keep trying to create value for other people.
